Teriyaki sauce is a Japanese sauce that has a mixture of sweet, tangy, and savoury flavours. It’s often used as a marinade or glaze, noodle or stir fry sauce, dipping sauce, or condiment. Teriyaki tofu is a flavour packed, protein rich dinner option, that’s quick and easy to make.

My Japanese inspired teriyaki tofu bowl is made with extra firm tofu, cut into cubes, and fried until crispy. Then it’s coated in a sticky teriyaki sauce and served with rice and sesame seeds. I always freeze my tofu before using it, so it has more texture and can absorb more flavour.

My homemade teriyaki sauce is made with soy sauce for a deep umami flavour, brown sugar for sweetness, garlic and ginger for depth and flavour, rice vinegar for tanginess, and sesame oil for a hint of nuttiness.

How to make homemade teriyaki sauce

Making homemade teriyaki sauce is easy and takes just a few minutes. Combine the soya sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, corn starch, ginger, and garlic in a small bowl. Make sure you whisk vigorously to break apart any corn starch clumps.

Once you’ve cooked the tofu, add the sauce. As it heats up and begins to simmer, it will thicken significantly and turn into a sticky sauce.

It should take about 2-3 minutes for the sauce to thicken completely. You can always remove the pan from the heat once the sauce has reached your desired consistency.

How to assemble teriyaki tofu and rice bowl

To assemble your tofu bowl, add cooked rice of your choice to a bowl. I recommend white, jasmine, or brown rice.

Then serve the teriyaki tofu over the rice. You could also serve some sauteed vegetables, like broccoli, carrots, or bell pepper.

Then top the bowl with a generous amount of toasted sesame seeds.

Ingredients

More about the ingredients in this recipe. The exact measurements are below.

Teriyaki tofu ingredients on a white marble background with black text.
  • Extra firm tofu- It is easy to fry and holds its shape well.
  • Soya sauce- The base of the teriyaki sauce.
  • Brown sugar- For sweetness.
  • Garlic and ginger- To flavour the sauce.
  • Rice vinegar- For tanginess.
  • Sesame oil- For nutty flavour.
  • Cornstarch- To thicken the sauce and make crispy tofu pieces.
  • Oil for cooking- I recommend a neutral oil for frying the tofu, like canola, vegetable, or peanut.

Substitutions

  • Instead of extra firm to, firm tofu works. Anything softer will likely crumble apart.
  • If you don’t have rice vinegar, regular white vinegar will work.
  • White sugar will work for sweetness instead of brown sugar.

Instructions

  • Drain the tofu and wrap it in paper towel. Set it aside for 10 minutes, under a heavy pan or bowl to press out the extra moisture.
  • Cut the tofu into about bite sized cubes and toss with the cornstarch.

Tips for making teriyaki tofu

  • Freeze the tofu: Freezing tofu gives it more texture and allows it to absorb more flavour.
  • I recommend using fresh garlic for the ultimate flavour.

What to serve with tofu bowls

Serve teriyaki tofu with rice or noodles! I like jasmine rice or brown rice. Udon noodles are chewy and delicious, and go great with tofu too. For a nutrition boost, serve the tofu with quinoa, couscous, or bulgar.

Storage

Store the tofu in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, microwave until heated through, or heat in a pan over medium heat with a splash of water.
