Vegan Corn Dogs | A crispy, fluffy cornmeal batter coating a vegan hot dog and deep fried until golden. These crispy vegan corn dogs are the perfect snack or appetizer, especially when drizzled with classic sauces like ketchup, mustard, and vegan mayo.

These vegan corn dogs are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, with a soft vegan hot dog centre. They’re easy to make in just 20 minutes and are a classic fair food, perfect for an appetizer.
Because corn dogs are deep fried, people tend to assume they’re difficult to make, but they are actually very simple!
Simply make the cornmeal batter, using half cornmeal and half all-purpose flour for the perfect fluffy yet crispy texture, and let it rest while you skewer the vegan hot dogs and lightly coat them in flour to ensure the batter sticks.
Then, deep fry the corn dogs for 4-6 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Drizzle with your favourite sauces. My favourite combination is ketchup, mustard, and vegan mayonnaise.
What Makes These Vegan Corn Dogs So Good?
These vegan corn dogs are so delicious and addictive for a few different reasons!
The soft, vegan hot dog centre is coated in a cornmeal batter that stays fluffy on the inside and gets crispy and golden on the outside.
The cornmeal batter made with a splash of maple syrup gives the corn dogs a slightly sweet taste. The savoury hot dogs contrast perfectly with the slightly sweet coating.

What Are Corn Dogs Coated In?
These corn dogs are coated in a classic cornmeal batter made with both cornmeal and all-purpose flour. Sometimes corn dogs are coated in a flour-only batter, like a pancake batter, but many recipes use cornmeal because it offers a slightly sweet taste and crispy texture.
Corn dogs aren’t called corn dogs for just any reason. They’re coated in a crispy, golden cornmeal batter.
To make a cornmeal batter for corn dogs, combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, maple syrup, and plant-based milk in a medium bowl. Let it rest for a few minutes to thicken up. You can skewer the hot dogs during this time.
Can I Air Fry Vegan Corn Dogs?
No, I do not recommend air frying these vegan corn dogs. It is necessary to deep-fry these corn dogs because they are coated in a batter.
Deep frying the battered corn dogs ensures that they are evenly coated in the crispy batter. If you were to air fry these vegan corn dogs, the batter would fall off the corn dogs.
You can reheat the corn dogs in the air fryer, however! Place leftover vegan corn dogs in a 350°F/180°C air fryer for about 10 minutes or until heated through.

FAQ’s
You’ll know when the corn dogs are done when the batter is a dark golden brown colour. Deep frying the corn dogs in hot oil should only take a few minutes on each side.
If the batter is falling off the corn dogs, it may be too thin. Add some more flour and cornmeal to thicken the batter. It should be thicker than pancake batter. Make sure to coat the hot dogs in flour before the batter.
You can freeze leftover vegan corn dogs. Allow them to cool and then freeze for up to 6 months. Reheat in the microwave or air fryer.
No, you cannot use coarse cornmeal for corn dogs, as the texture will be gritty and may cause the batter to fall off the hot dogs. Use fine yellow cornmeal.

Crispy Vegan Corn Dogs Recipe
Equipment
- 4 skewers
- tongs
Ingredients
- 4 vegan hot dogs
- ¾ cups fine yellow cornmeal
- ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 cup plant-based milk
Instructions
- Heat a neutral oil in a heavy-bottom pot over medium heat to 375°F/190°C. I use a candy thermometer for accuracy.
- Combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Add the plant based milk and maple syrup. Whisk the batter together, making sure there are no lumps. The batter should be just thicker than pancake batter. Set aside for 5 minutes to thicken.
- Skewer the hot dogs, pushing the skewer about 3/4 of the way through the hot dog.
- Coat the skewered hot dogs in the batter. I found it easiest to scoop the batter over the hot dog, letting it drip down. Allow the excess batter to drip off before carefully submerging the corn dog into the hot oil.
- Deep fry the corn dogs until golden brown, about 5-6 minutes. Flip them halfway for even browning. Most of my corn dogs flipped on their own after a couple of minutes.
