I can’t be the only person who thinks French onion dip is the best chip dip. It’s creamy, easy to make, and so flavourful. I always pair this onion dip with plain potato chips to really emphasize the flavour of the dip.
This creamy vegan French onion dip is great for making ahead of time, or for meal prep, as the flavours intensify as it sits in the fridge. Give it a few hours, and you’ll taste the onion much more.
The dip is made with dairy-free sour cream. It’s thick, creamy, and great for dips. Sweet, jammy caramelized onions are added along with vegan Worcestershire sauce, a splash of lemon juice, and spices.

How to Make Vegan French Onion Dip
Vegan French onion dip is very easy to make. Caramelizing the onions takes about 25-30 minutes, and it’s so worth it for the depth of flavour and subtle sweetness.
Once the onions are caramelized over medium-low heat for 20 minutes, allow them to cool slightly before mixing with vegan sour cream, vegan Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and spices.
Serve the dip immediately, or let the flavours meld together in the fridge for a couple of hours or overnight.

What Kind of Onion Is Best for French Onion Dip?
Making French onion dip involves caramelizing onions, giving the dip a slightly sweet flavour and subtle texture.
Yellow onions are best for French onion dip. They are naturally sweeter than white or red onions, yet less sweet and more flavourful than sweet onions. Due to their sugar and moisture content, they brown nicely and provide a deep flavour.
Yellow onions also soften nicely, yielding a soft, jammy texture instead of turning mushy or stringy.
What Is the Secret to the Best Vegan French Onion Dip?
The secret to the best homemade French onion dip lies in two key ingredients.
The first is vegan sour cream. I suggest going with your personal favourite. My tried-and-true vegan sour cream is Earth’s Own Dairy-Free Sour Cream, and it’s what I use in this vegan French onion dip.
The second is caramelized onions. Caramelizing onions is a low and slow process, meaning you cook them on medium-low heat for about 20-25 minutes to get the ideal soft, jammy texture and sweet flavour.

- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon minced dried garlic
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons dried chives
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil over medium-low heat in a stainless steel or cast-iron pan. These types of pans are best for caramelizing. - Set the onions aside and allow them to cool.
- In a mixing bowl, add the vegan sour cream, caramelized onions, lemon juice, vegan Worcestershire sauce, spices, and dried chives. Mix until just combined.
